The Mastermind Behind Design District’s Transformation

A little planning and plenty of action can  make a world of difference in a person’s life, or an entire district – as was the case with Miami Design District. The mastermind behind the makeover as many are already aware, is real estate developer Craig Robins.

Ocean Drive did a lengthy overview of the how, why and when of Design District’s transformation. The article examined how this section of Miami became the poster child for what can happen with a vision.

The Design District Miami Highlights:

Location – The Design District is less than ten minutes away from South Beach – by car.

Seeing Opportunities In Despair – In the mid-90s according to the report, Craig Robins saw an opening to purchase buildings  that ranged in prices from $20-$30 per SF. Now, property prices have increased significantly over the years.

Collaborations With Luxury Stores Mark A Winning Partnership – As established luxury brands sought innovative ways to continue their demand, labels like Luis Vuitton preferred a freestanding store that’s materialized today, over more restrictive leases like those found in the Bal Harbour Shops.

Art Basel – Which began in 2002 for Miami, brought a bevy of exposure to the Design District, according to Robins. The luxury retail district is now a go-to shopping destination to source unique items of fashion, fixtures and furnishing.

Now that a torrent of stores have opened, 2013 is set to bring in more shopping, more real estate, and more art for all NEW MIAMI districts.

Furthermore, in a recent press event Craig Robbins stated that he would be going back to the City for special zoning to create residential condos. These plans however would not commence until 2014.
